Pipe-on-Pipe Friction Reducer (Lubricant)

Completion fluids can either be water-based, oil-based, or clear brine fluids. Today, most completion fluids are designed to be solids-free or with a minimum percentage of solids. The wellbore operations that employ completion fluids include running production tubulars/screens, wellbore cleanup, and coiled tubing operations, among others. As high-angle, horizontal, extended-reach, and deepwater wells are drilled, high friction is one of the major problems that must be addressed. Additives can be added to the completion fluid to reduce the friction; however, some analysis should be done before making an additive selection to determine if the cause of the high friction is due to mechanical friction between two surfaces, or hydraulic pressure loss which is determined by fluid and tubing characteristics.

If the high friction is caused by mechanical friction between tubular equipment run into the well and the wellbore surface, then using a completion fluid with a low coefficient of friction, or imposing lubricity on the completion fluid through the use of lubricants can play an important role in controlling torque and drag during well operations. A lubricant is a substance introduced between two moving surfaces to reduce the friction between them, improving efficiency, and reducing wear. Mechanical friction between solid surfaces increases torque and the power required to run the tubular into the wellbore. Friction also increases stress on the tubular that can lead to twist-off of the pipe or interfere with running the pipe in and out of the hole. Therefore, for many operations involving wellbore tubulars, obtaining and maintaining low torque-and-drag factors can be the cause of a successful or failed operation.
