Lift Station/Wastewater Treatment Plant Remediation

Lift Station and Wastewater Treatment Plant Remediation

In the water treatment industry, FOG is an abbreviation for Fats, Oils, and Greases. FOG, as it enters a sewer drain, will cool, solidify, and adhere to the walls of sewer lines potentially causing blockages. Sewer line blockages can cause sewage to back up into nearby homes and businesses, resulting in health risks and often high costs to remedy the situation.

FOG that gets into sewer lines can travel to a Lift Station. Lift Stations operate on a float system which trigger pumps to pump sewage along the sewer system. FOG build-up on the floats can cause the float and Lift Station to fail, resulting in sewage overflow onto the ground and into water courses. If FOG finds its way through the sewer lines to a Wastewater Treatment Plant, it will negatively affect the water treatment processes and operations at the plant.

To treat or prevent FOG in a Lift Station, various chemicals such as solvents, detergents, and caustics are used. There are also bacteria and enzymes that can be used to degrease Lift Stations and collection systems. It is very important however, to select the right treatment solution, since the selection of the wrong chemical for example, may not make the grease disappear, but can cause the grease to be pushed further downstream, possibly all the way to the Wastewater Treatment plant, upsetting the plant and creating more problems that are not able to be remedied by the use of the chemical.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Remediation

Wastewater originates from homes, businesses, industry, as well as storm drains and rainwater runoff. The primary objective of wastewater treatment processes is to purify the water and make certain that it is safe for subsequent use once it has been returned to the environment as part of the water cycle. Wastewater treatment consists of several stages involving processes that are mechanical-based, biological-based, chemical-based, as well as by the use of membrane (filtration) processes.

Chemicals are used during wastewater treatment in an array of processes to expedite disinfection. The chemical processes are used alongside biological and physical cleaning processes to achieve various water standards. Many industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants use bacteria and other microorganisms to help with the process of cleaning sewage. Picking the right bacteria can be tricky since the selection depends on the specifics of a plant and the conditions of use.

Olive & Branch M&D offers the below product solutions for Lift Station FOG remediation, and for the proper operation and maintenance of Wastewater Treatment plants.
